MI Fiesta Shines at Commonwealth Classic 2024: A Fun-Filled Weekend of Dance and Achievement
As we say goodbye to another thrilling season, MI Fiesta Dance Studio wrapped up its final local competition of the year in style at the Commonwealth Classic Dancesport Competition (CWClassic) in Burlington, MA. Held from October 31st to November 26th, 2024, CWClassic brought together an enthusiastic crowd of dancers, spectators, and Halloween spirit. Our team of dancers, led by Imi, along with students Irina, Lauren, Eleanor, and Dale, brought not only technical skill and passion but also an unforgettable Halloween-themed presentation to this cherished local event.
This competition held a special place in our hearts as it marked the conclusion of our 2024 local dance season, and as always, the Commonwealth Classic did not disappoint. With a warm atmosphere, high-energy sessions, and well-coordinated event organization by Andrew Phillips and Helle Rusholt Yi, CWClassic has once again proven why it’s one of the Boston area’s most beloved dance competitions.

A Night of Enchantment: Wizard of Oz Costumes Won the costume contest in the Halloween Night Club Session
CWClassic’s famous Halloween-themed Night Club Session kicked off the competition on Thursday evening, and MI Fiesta came fully prepared to wow the crowd. Every year, we eagerly plan our costumes and theme months in advance, and this year, we went with a beloved classic: The Wizard of Oz! Our team’s costumes captured the essence of this timeless story:
- Irina as the Lion – embodying courage on and off the dance floor.
- Dale as the Tin Man – displaying heart and dedication in every step.
- Lauren as Glinda – bringing a touch of magic and grace.
- Imi as the Scarecrow – lighthearted and nimble, guiding our journey.
- Eleanor as Dorothy – capturing the spirit of adventure.
The crowd loved our theme, and the judges agreed! Our hard work paid off when MI Fiesta was awarded first place in the costume contest. It was an absolute thrill to see our students and instructors receive recognition for their creativity, dedication, and love for dance. This exciting victory set the tone for the rest of the weekend, filling everyone with excitement for the upcoming dance sessions.

Friday’s Matinee: American Rhythm Successes
Friday’s matinee session at CWClassic was dedicated to American Rhythm, showcasing some of the liveliest and most vibrant dances. For this session, our dancers were focused on competing in multiple categories, from Bronze to Silver levels, against some of the best dancers in the region.
Eleanor and Imi competed in the ProAm 3-Dance Events Bronze C American Rhythm, showing off their hard-earned skill and finesse in styles like cha-cha, american rumba, and swing. Their outstanding performance earned them an impressive 2nd place out of 6 couples.
In addition, Eleanor and Imi’s rhythm carried them to another 2nd place finish in the ProAm Bronze Scholarships Bronze C American Rhythm. This achievement speaks volumes about Eleanor’s dedication and Imi’s expert guidance.
Irina, with her graceful moves and refined technique, also excelled in the ProAm Silver Scholarships Silver C American Rhythm, earning a fantastic 2nd place finish out of 6 couples. Her performance was a true highlight of the event, capturing the attention and admiration of the audience and judges alike.
These achievements reflect the many hours our dancers put into refining their techniques, practicing choreography, and building confidence. The hard work truly paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder of Eleanor and Irina for their well-deserved placements.

Saturday Matinee: Elegant Performances in American Smooth
Saturday’s American Smooth session brought out the grace and sophistication that MI Fiesta dancers have cultivated all season. This style, known for its sweeping movements and close connection between partners, offered the perfect opportunity for our team to shine.
Imi and Irina competed in the ProAm Silver Scholarships Silver C American Smooth where they brought poise and passion to the floor. Their precision and fluidity in dances such as the waltz, foxtrot and tango captivated the audience and the judges alike, earning them a well-deserved 2nd place. This achievement highlights the artistry of their partnership and the dedication they put into perfecting each step.
The Smooth session allowed Imi and Irina to demonstrate their versatility, transitioning from the high-energy Rhythm styles of the previous day to the elegant lines and dynamic movements of Smooth. Their performance was the highlight of the week.

With the Commonwealth Classic 2024 behind us, we’re setting our sights on the next major event: the Ohio Star Ball in Columbus, OH, from November 19th to 24th. Known as one of the largest and most prestigious dance competitions in the country, Ohio Star Ball will bring together top dancers from around the world.
