Angel or Devil? Behind the Scenes of Our May 10th Showcase

May 12, 2025 | Ballroom dance showcase, Ballroom Dance Events

Did you ever wonder what happens behind the curtain of a dance showcase? Let me tell you a story that starts with one wild idea and ends in standing ovations, sweat, and maybe a little AC/DC…

The News That Sparked It All

It all began at the end of March.

I got word that TK Dance Studio would host a themed showcase on May 10th. The theme? Angel and Devil. A classic. Instantly my dance brain lit up—how can we bring this to life with movement, music, and attitude?

Showcases are always exciting… and challenging. You don’t just dance—you tell a story. And with a theme like Angel vs. Devil, we knew we had to bring serious fire.

Step One: Who Wants In?

First, I asked my students: “Do you want to do this?”

Four students jumped in right away, full of excitement and ready to get creative:

  • Irina Shaoeton
  • Mawya Scocair
  • Amanda Sinesi
  • Sharon Pywell

Now came the real challenge…

Step Two: Finding the Perfect Songs

For a showcase theme to really shine, the music has to hit hard.

Irina came up with the idea to dance to “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC.
OMG. I love AC/DC. That energy? That crowd recognition? Pure gold.

With Mawya, we picked “La Bamba” by Ritchie Valens. Fun, vibrant, with devilish charm built in.

Amanda needed something bold, something fierce.
We landed on “Disturbia” by Rihanna. Dark. Mysterious. Perfect for a devil vibe.

Then there’s Sharon, my classic rock queen. She’s got that smoky, vintage style.
We chose “Mustang Sally” by The Commitments for her Swing routine. Smooth and soulful—just like her.

Funny enough, nobody wanted to be the Angel!
Maybe they all knew I’m the real angel around here—haha, obviously.

Step Three: Creating the Shows

Once the songs were set, the magic began.

We built the choreography, step by step. Found the right styles to match each story. I took time to edit each song down to that perfect 1.5–2 minute sweet spot—not too long, not too short.

In the end, we had:

  • Irina doing a Paso Doble + Cha Cha fusion to Highway to Hell
  • Mawya dancing a spicy Salsa to La Bamba
  • Amanda performing a fierce Paso Doble to Disturbia
  • Sharon grooving her heart out in a Swing to Mustang Sally

Rehearsals, Laughter & Last-Minute Magic

We spent weeks together—laughing, sweating, tweaking choreography.
Every week, I saw their confidence grow. And let me tell you—these ladies delivered.

The night before the showcase, we even had a Friday dance party at TK Dance Studio to loosen up. Good vibes, great people, and a little wine (maybe).

Showtime: May 10th

And then… it was show day.

You could feel the nerves in the air, but that’s normal. When you care, you get nervous.
And when the music hit, every single dancer gave their best.

The audience was on fire. The energy? Unmatched. The costumes? Sparkling. The steps? Sharp.
But more importantly—the emotion came through. Each dancer told a story. Some cheeky. Some powerful. All unforgettable.

A huge thank you to Tibor Kerekes and TK Dance for organizing such a beautiful event. The lighting, the sound, the flow of the evening—it was flawless.
