Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
Not every student naturally enjoys performing in front of an audience. Some love the spotlight, while others prefer to blend in during social dances. But even if performing feels intimidating, stepping onto the stage for a showcase dance can be transformative. I’ve had students who were hesitant at first, but after their performance, they told me,
“I never thought I could do this, but now I feel like I can do anything!”
Let Your Imagination Run Wild
One of the best parts of a ballroom dance show is the creative freedom. Unlike the strict competition routines, you can explore unique themes, dramatic storytelling, and even different dance styles. Don’t limit yourself, you can do anything. I have one student who told me,
“I want to be Cinderella in the ballroom,” or

She was more than 80 years old in that time and you know what we did. They both made their dreams come true!

As a teacher, I’m always thinking about potential showcase ideas. I hear a song on the radio, watch a Broadway show, or see a scene in a movie, and immediately I start imagining how it could be brought to life on the dance floor. Your instructor will have plenty of ideas to help you create a memorable performance.

One of the biggest appeals of a showcase dance is that it’s not limited by dance level. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced dancer, you can create a performance tailored to your abilities. Many students love that they can break free from standard syllabus routines and incorporate open choreography. The most important thing is to enjoy the moment and bring your personality to the floor!
Tips for a Successful Ballroom Dance Showcase
Here are a few key things to keep in mind to make your showcase dance unforgettable:
- Keep it short and sweet: 1:30 to 2:00 minutes is plenty. Sometimes, less is more!
- Be aware of your audience: Avoid having your back to the crowd too often. Move dynamically and use the entire floor.
- Highlight special moments: If your routine includes a dramatic lift, dip, or spin, make sure it’s placed where it will have the most impact.
- Choose the right music tempo: Avoid drastically changing the original speed of a song. A Samba often looks better slightly faster, while a Bolero might be more beautiful at a slower pace.
- Performance over technique: While good technique is important, in a ballroom dance showcase, the performance aspect is what truly captivates an audience.
