Why should I learn ballroom dancing?

There are many benefits to ballroom dancing. Dancing is a fun, social, way to increase your physical activity. Students improve their endurance, balance, and flexibility while learning to dance. And many dancesport students develop long lasting friendships.

Is there any age limit for ballroom dancing? Am I too old to start learning ballroom dancing?

There is no age limit for ballroom dancing, we have several senior students, who really enjoy the light exercise while practicing dancing and attending dance competition events.

I am not a dancer, I am not graceful, I am introverted. Will learning to dance work out for me?

Nobody is born as a ballroom dancer, it takes nothing else just practice to become one. Taking private ballroom dance lessons is a perfect way to learn how to dance, gain confidence and become a graceful dancer quickly. Even the shyest and absolutely inexperienced students can confidently attend social dance events after taking 5-6 classes.

Do I need to have any dance experience to start learning ballroom dancing?

A: The good news is that you can start learning ballroom dancing without any prior experience. Although some students may have a background in another form of dance, many do not. At MI Fiesta Dance the instructor will “meet you where you’re at” in terms of your dance ability and experience.

Do I need a ballroom dancing partner to attend the classes?

No. At MI Fiesta Dance Studio, you will receive instructions and dance with a professional dance instructor. This is also the quickest way to learn ballroom dancing.

I just want to go to dance parties and have fun. When will I be able to attend?

You don’t need any experience to attend a ballroom dance party. These dancing events are fun and welcoming. Attendees with more experience are gracious and will teach you some simple steps even if you are unfamiliar with the particular dance. At a ballroom dance party, it’s all about having fun and technique is secondary. That said, if you have the basic steps and techniques of some of the typical social dances you will have so much more fun. In order to be best prepared, consider learning the five most popular dances; Rumba, Salsa, East Coast Swing, Waltz, and Foxtrot.

What are all the different ballroom dances I can learn?

Dances are grouped into various categories. You can choose to learn just one group or all of them. In addition to the dances listed in the table below, there are also Social Dances which include Salsa, Bachata, Hustle, West Coast Swing, and Argentine Tango. Many of the dances listed below are also danced at parties.

International Ballroom Dances: Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep

International Latin Dances: Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive, Samba, Paso Doble

American Ballroom Dances: Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot

American Latin Dances: Rhumba, Cha Cha, East Coast Swing, Bolero, Mambo

Other than private and group ballroom dance lessons and parties, are there other activities where I can explore dance further?

Yes, there are opportunities to participate in dance showcases and dancing competitions. Many students participate in these activities as they are very social. Showcases offer an opportunity to create a routine and do something a little more out of the ordinary and fun. And dancesport competitions are a great way to set goals for yourself as you improve your dancing technique.

What should I wear to my dance lessons? What types of shoes should I wear?

For your first ballroom dance lesson wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Later ballroom dance shoes and dancewear is recommended. Your instructor will explain all about dancewear and recommend the most suitable set for you.

The cost of private ballroom dance lessons are expensive! What else can I do to improve my dancing skills?

You can attend group ballroom dance classes, which are cheaper by the hour along with your private dance classes. This helps practicing the basic dance techniques. Your other option is to attend social dance parties and events, which also offer perfect opportunities to polish your moves.

What is the recommended ratio of private to group dance lessons?

It really depends on how fast you would like to get to a certain level in ballroom dancing. The minimum recommended frequency is one private dance lesson with one group dance lesson per week. When you prefer a faster pace, you can attend two or three lessons weekly.

Can't I just learn ballroom dancing by watching YouTube or TikTok videos?

YouTube and TikTok are great resources to discover what different types of dances look like, as well as the music associated with each one. The problem is that you cannot see yourself as you try these steps. More important, many times with dance technique your eyes can’t break down the body actions that create the movement that you see. You could waste a lot of time and pick up a lot of bad habits that you will have to painfully unlearn. A professional ballroom dance instructor, such as at MI Fiesta Dance, will get you started right away with the correct techniques.
